Digital Data in the Age of “The Breach” (D21c)

In the age of digital data our society has taken a rather laissez-faire attitude toward personal information. We think nothing of providing our Social Security number to credit bureaus and banks. Even as we enter our credit card numbers to make a purchase at Amazon, Walmart, Wish, or Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, we have little knowledge of just how much of our personal data is out there. With the recent data breaches of high powered data warehouses such as Equifax and finance giants such as Deloitte the possibility that your personal data is up for sale somewhere is more likely than not. This seminar will explore the costs, the types of actors in these events, and their methodology. We will also cover ways to detect and analyze data breaches, as well as the precautions that businesses and private citizens can take to protect their data in the Age of the Breach.
